What is Mastery?

Mastery Learning at Oakmont

Most schools move at the speed of the calendar. At Oakmont, we move at the speed of your child’s understanding.

Mastery learning uses Explicit structured methodology (Direct Instruction) to ensure deep understanding of the subject. Mastery learning approaches aim to ensure that all pupils have mastered key concepts before moving on to the next topic, in contrast with traditional teaching methods in which pupils may be left behind, with gaps of misunderstanding widening.

We break concepts into small, achievable steps.  Students practise with clear feedback.  They review only the parts they have not mastered.  And they do not move on until they get it, really get it!

This approach is powerful because:

Students learn with confidence, not confusion

Struggling learners do not fall behind

High achievers accelerate quickly

Anxiety drops because expectations are clear and predictable

Knowledge sticks, permanently

It is not about perfection.

It is about understanding deeply enough to build the next layer.
